Are you ready for MAMA?

Heard of MAMA? I’m really so excited and can’t wait to catch MAMA in cinemas. So based on the trailer, it seems quite scary but what excites me is the story plot. I am very curious as to why is there a child in a closet and why “A Mother’s Love is Forever”, the movie’s tagline.

If you had watched MAMA, do share with me if you would really encouraged me to watch this movie. And for those who have not, watch this trailer.

What-sy Wednesday

Image

Hi guys! I’m back with What-sy Wednesday! I have been watching movies of different genres lately and I kind of starting to enjoy movies of romantic comedy more than action and horror, which is my usual favourite. What is happening? I really want to know what genre do people enjoy and so today’s question is:

What is your favourite genre in terms of movies and why? (it’ll be great if you can recommend me some movies too!)

Do share with me your favourite genres and why by commenting on this post. I really loved to interact with you so do open up and don’t be shy.

Here’s a short list of all the movies I watched in the year 2012. There are a few that I missed out or I can’t remember. But I would honestly say that each of these movies are very unique and as a filmmaker, I did take out some learning point from each movies. And as a movie lover, I really enjoyed every single movie that I watched though there were some movies that was not up to my satisfaction.

Silent Hill Revelation

It was a mysterious enough title that intrigued me to catch it on cinemas, few days back with my friends. Silent Hill Revelation, a sequel to the horror movie Silent Hill (2006), was written and directed by Michael J. Bassett.

Cast

Adelaide Clemens

Sean Bean

Kit Harrington

Martin Donovan

Carrie-Anne Moss

Plot

It all started with Sharon (Adelaide Clemens) being chased by some monstrous creatures in an unknown carnival where she ended up being burned alive on a merry-go-round. But it turns out to be a dream when she was woken up by her father, Harry (Sean Bean) consoling her. Harry was suddenly killed by a creature from behind. Sharon screamed and woke up from a dream so it turns out that it was a dream within a dream of her dream. Okay that sounds like Inception (it’s a great movie by the way). The beginning was quite intriguing to me because of the suspense that kept me questioning like why did she had such a dream and why is Sharon presuming the name Heather and going to a new school?? I would agree that the audience were kind of trick at the first part of Silent Hill Revelation.

The suspense was greatly built on at the next part where a man started stalking Sharon when she was about to leave school. She called Harry to pick her up as she was scared. Harry asked to meet at a shopping mall but when he was about to leave the house, he was captured by creatures from Silent Hill. Things get heated up when Sharon started to “hallucinate” and see humans changing into some scary creatures. There was too much blood on screen that I could not stop myself from covering my eyes. But I did manage to take a sneak peek when a private investigator, which works for Silent Hill, suddenly chased Sharon.

I assumed that the private investigator was going to catch her but instead, he warned her to run away. But it was too late because the private investigator was killed right in front of Sharon by some creature covered with sharp blades. The murder of the private investigator was being investigated but Sharon managed to run away. The story became more impossible when things happen illogically, like Vincent (Kit Harrington) appeared out of nowhere offering to send Sharon home.

Sharon came home to a message that says “ COME TO SILENT HILL”. Vincent became a savior that offers to help Sharon to bring her to Silent Hill to save Harry despite the fact that Harry had reminded Sharon to not go there no matter what happens. Along the way, Vincent turns out to be the child of the order, son of Claudia Wolf (Carrie-Anne Moss), the cult leader of Silent Hill. In which, he was suddenly being taken back to Silent Hill, leaving Sharon alone in the cold to walk to Silent Hill. Things get more and more weird when Sharon entered Silent Hill and met Alessa’s mother. It was said that Sharon is the inner part of Alessa and that Claudia wants Sharon in order to kill Alessa.

eHNpZGYyMTI=_o_silent-hill-revelation-3d-trailer-official-2012-hd---

I was looking forward to what was going to happened the moment Sharon entered Silent Hill. Turns out that whatever she dreamt of came true but the climax was weak. Alessa appeared in the middle of a burning merry-go round and hugged Sharon and they became one. In real life, I am pretty sure that something like that would not happened. Somehow, Sharon survived the burn and managed to meet Claudia, where Harry and Vincent was imprisoned. It was pretty hilarious that the script seems pretty immature, like how Harry shouted out to Claudia “You do not hurt her!”

silent-hill-revelation3d-img04

Overall, Silent Hill Revelation was just a 2 star movie to me because of its weak story plot that was built up with a lot of stunning effects and costumes. This 20 million budget movie was good with all the graphics and settings but it failed to capture the audience with a good story plot despite being a sequel to Silent Hill. In case you want to know what this horror-video-turned-film Silent Hill Revelation is all about, do check out the trailer here. Do write your comments about what you think about Silent Hill Revelation if you have catch it!

Fighting (2009)

So finally, last Saturday night, I decided to watch Fighting, anticipating all the great actions from the fighting scenes. Here’s what I’ve got to say about it!Image

Fighting (2009) is about Shawn MacArthur (Channing Tatum), a gentle son of a wrestling coach that earns a living by selling fake products in New York City.  He then faced a group of “thieves” who were trying to obstruct him from selling fake products by the streets. Things get violent when the group of “thieves” started to attack Shawn and snatched his products. Everything became chaotic and messy.  Being persistent, Shawn fought back to get his items. It was quite clear that a man was behind this set up, trying to see if Shawn was strong enough to fight back. True enough, Shawn fought back till he had to run away from the cops.  This fighting scene made me felt intrigued to finish watching the movie despite the fact of the unstable and shaky shots along the way. I would honestly say, the first fighting scene was indeed crucial in the first 5 minutes of the movie and I have to compliment the Dito Montiel, writer and director of Fighting, for this smart move.

Image

The plot gets more exciting as Shawn met Harvey Boarden (Terence Howard), a guy who offered him a ‘job’ where he can make easy money. In fact, Harvey was the one who set up the theft in the beginning. Being stubborn, Shawn was reluctant to believe Harvey’s words but later on, he changed his mind. Money was the motivation. Shawn had to earn a living thus, he trusted Harvey and agreed to be a fighter and had to wait for Harvey’s calls or sms every single day for a fight. It was here that I thought that Harvey was some kind of agent hiring professional boxers or wrestlers but I was wrong. The twisting plot became more exciting because things became unpredictable in this movie thus far.

Along the way, Shawn met a girl, Zulay Velez (Zulay Henao) who lives with her daughter and grandmother. They met in the beginning when Zulay wanted to buy the fake product from Shawn. They met again in a club after Shawn’s first fight and that was when sparks flew between them and they became closer. However, things got way too complicated when Shawn found out that Zulay and Harvey knew each other. I think this was interesting because I was also shocked to know that there was something going on between Zulay and Harvey. But it turns out that Zulay had been helping Harvey to bet on fights and they had always pretended that they didn’t know each other. This was quite confusing at first but intelligent because many would have thought that Zulay and Harvey are having a relationship or sort of.

Image

The last fight was the most anticipated scene. The moment Shawn bumped into his rival, Evan Hailey (Brian White) back in those school days, we all can guessed that something was going to happened between Shawn and Evan. It was inevitable that the tension arise whenever they made eye contact in the club will eventually lead to a big finale fight.

Image

Throughout all the fight scenes, it was obvious that Shawn is someone who possessed no great skills but his positive attitude and determination finally leads him to victory and this is the kind of movie I enjoy watching. I would give Fighting (2009) 3 and ½ stars!

French Film Festival 2012

Entrance of the Red CarpetOn 5 December 2012, I was honoured to be able to help out in a large-scale event, French Film Festival. This event was in-line with Asia TV Forum & Market | ScreenSingapore, Asia’s leading entertainment content event that was from 4 – 7 December 2012. There were press conferences, gala premieres and International Emmy Awards Nominees Panel and screenings. There were gala premieres of great movies like The Last Tycoon, produced by Bona Film Group and The Wedding Diary II and many more.

So on that day, I was ushering the VIPs and guests to the movie screening at Cathay. The movie screening on that day was the French Film, Happiness Never Comes Alone (Un bonheur n’arrive jamais seul). It stars Sophie Marceau and is directed by James Huth. Even the French model-actress Sophie Marceau attended the event.

It’s sad that I didn’t get to take a snapshot with Sophie Marceau L

My classmates and I were so psyched and excited to be able to get a snapshot like celebrities on the red carpet.

An All Access Media Pass!! Cool

It was definitely a great experience to be able to witness how a media event worked and seeing some of the known directors attending the event, especially for me, a budding filmmaker. I would like to thank my friends who gave me an opportunity to be a part of this great event!

So What’s Your Back-Up Plan?

Are you searching for a movie that is way different from a typical love story where the guy likes the girl and then the girl likes him back, but there were obstacles along the way but somehow ended up together?? Also, as we’ve always known that a guy and a girl has to fall in love, get married and then have a baby but in this movie, it does not necessarily need to be in that order. I can assure you that The Back-Up Plan is the perfect out-of-the-ordinary love story movie.

PLOT

The Back-Up Plan (2010), is one of the best romantic comedy movie I’ve watched so far. Well, I just borrowed it from my school library since my friends recommended me to watch it so I spent my morning, which was around 1am++, watching it by myself. I would say that based on the synopsis alone, the film is quite interesting and really intrigued me to watch it.

Zoe, played by J.Lo, has really given up all hope on finding the right guy and hence, she’s decided to get an artificial insemination because she really wanted to have a child so badly. It was very out-of-the-box for the film to start with the scene where she’s being artificially inseminated in the doctor’s clinic and Zoe started speaking out her thoughts. I think that was very creative and differentiates this film from other rom-com movies that starts with a girl falling out of love or a girl who just broke up with her boyfriend.

Image

The plot gets more interesting when Zoe met Stan (Alex O’Loughlin), a guy who sells cheese but actually he owns a farm (yup, he’s rich). He is almost perfect, a guy with good personality, good body, rich and everything that is ideal. BUT the problem is that Zoe is pregnant and now that they have both liked each other, how is Zoe going to tell Stan that she is pregnant??

Image

Well, things get tough and rocky when Zoe finally blurts out the truth to Stan in the middle of a cheese farm (can you imagine the smell of cheese? HAHA).  Stan was too shocked and felt that he wasn’t ready for a baby but then again, he loves Zoe a lot. But I’m not going to spoil the ending for those of you who have not watched it yet.

I would give The Back-Up Plan, 4/5 stars because of its hilarious and different story plot. In terms of cinematography, director Alan Poul did a great job in capturing the subject in every shot. It was comfortable to watch the movie without having to think of what to focus on because the shots were well planned.

Quote from The Back-Up Plan

“Zoe: [Zoe gets in a taxi cab] Oh, excuse me this is my cab.

 Stan: What, you own it?

Zoe: No, but I’m about to rent it.”

” A Story is about Drama. Drama comes from Conflict. Conflict is created from Tension.”
– Kan Lume

One of the nicest lecturers I’ve met so far, that taught great and invaluable skills and knowledge that cannot be bought with money or anything else in this world. He never fails to inspire me with his teachings every week in Directing for Film class. One day, I hope to create an art film that really displays whatever I’ve learnt from him.

Hello Wello!!

Hi all, so i’ve created this blog specially for my social media module. So a little introduction about me, I’m 18, studying Media & Communication in Singapore Polytechnic and also taking Certificate in Digital Film. Like what i mentioned in my previous post, i’ve never blogged before cause i didn’t really see the use of it till recently. I noticed that maybe, by blogging, i will be able to gain more experience in this world where social media is catching up with everyone’s lives. So here i am, taking this opportunity to blog and hope to gain readers and followers.

Well, i enjoy watching movies though i don’t watch it in cinemas that often. HAHA! I prefer to borrow from library and watch it and yup, i prefer to watch HD movies. There is no denying that The Avengers is my favourite movie of all times and really am looking forward to the The Avengers 2 or something.

Why The Avengers?? Well, partly because i adore Captain America and primarily because i just love how the shots were planned and how the effects seem to fit in very well into the movie. It’s almost flawless to me!! In terms of genre, i prefer to watch Rom-Com, Horror (I LAUGH WHEN I WATCH HORROR) and Action. I prefer fast-moving movies or musical-like movies!! But who knows, throughout this blogging thing, i will learn how to watch other different type of genres. Feel free to recommend me movies!

Anyway, I may not be doing reviews all about the latest movies. In fact, i prefer to watch the past years movies and maybe music occasionally. So stay tuned! Thanks for reading!!
